Let's Talk Together Community Meeting
We’d like more people from our communities to get involved with the work we do.
It’s only by listening to what our communities tell us that we can work together to make Central Bedfordshire a really great place in which to live, work, learn and travel.
Let’s Talk Together community meetings will give members of the community and local groups the opportunity to discuss their particular issues and concerns with Councillors and representatives from key organisations such as police, health, children/education, community safety, environment, business and volunteering to name but a few.

Cricket: Gypps and overseas star Stopp shine as Bray draw
The 2's batted first and totalled 171 for the loss of 5 wickets, with a well constructed 76 from opener Andy Gypps and 34 from number 3 Jones. There was even a rare appearance from former captain Dave Wheeler who made 7 batting at 5.
In reply there was a 5 wicket haul and 3 catches from Jonty Stopp, son of resident 2nd team scorer Judy, who was visiting from his now home in America. Stewkley did manage to grind out a draw, even with skipper Kerins using every outfield player bar one as a bowler in an effort to find a breakthrough as the game ended.
An excellent performance from the 2's who came within inches of snatching a victory.

Cricket: Village thrash 1st XI
The first XI fielded first on a sunny Saturday, which proved almost fatal as Village rattled up 290-3 from their 44 overs.
All Village batsmen contributed to the cause and with some bad fielding aiding the opposition, a massive total was ran up. The reply, never really got going, with Chopper falling LBW in the 2nd over and all other wickets falling frequently.
Skipper Norris batted defiantly, for his very well played 80 until edging behind in the penultimate over, aided all the way by Manny Barker who stood fast for close to 20 overs, battling hard for the potential draw.
The Bray fell very well short all out for 156 and will surely want to bounce back with a strong performance against MK City this coming Saturday.

Cricket: Sunday XI fall just short
A very young Bray Sunday XI travelled to Studham, who batted first after the weather settled and amassed 234 with opening batsmen Welch making 84 and Woof 61.
The Bray toiled hard and good figures were returned of 4-18 for Paul Davies on debut, 2-35 for James Greene and 2-2 for Matt Ringsell on what was probably his first outing as a bowler!
In reply, The Bray innings got off to a solid start, until Peacock fell for 39 to the bowling off Thompson. Dave Hopkins soldiered on after entering in the 9th over and finished with 92 not out, being his highest ever score for The Bray!
Bowler Thorne ripped through the middle and lower order finishing with 6 wickets and ultimately ending Bray's faint hopes of a win as they ended up 186-9 from their allotted 40 overs.

Cricket: Eaton Bray take on the FCCL Representative XI
The FCCL Representative XI took on Eaton Bray on Sunday 8th May in a Twenty20 match at The Rye Gardens as part of Eaton Bray's open day.
Eaton Bray batted first and posted 165-6 with 50 from Wes Hoskings, 41 from James Flecknell and 30* from Paul Harris. The pick of the bowlers being Paul Loveland with 2-11 off 4 overs.
In response, the Representative side were dismissed for 86 in 17.4 overs, Stewart Phillipson being the only Representative side member to score double figures with 24. Paul Harris was the pick of the bowlers, 3-5 off 2, and R Peacock taking 2-11 off 2.
A great day for Eaton Bray, attracting a lot of new youth players to the club through their latest coaching initiative.

Cricket: Eversholt squeeze out the Bray in village cup
In a very competitive game played in a good spirit to the end, home team Eversholt ran out winners by 20 runs despite a powerfully struck 72 by Flecknell. Eversholt batted first and compiled 207ao from 39.5 overs with Litchfield 44 and Ben Nichols 47 providing the majority of the runs. Ellerton took 3-24 and Flecknell 2-29 to help hold the home team down to a chaseable target, however with the Bray 0-1 after 3 overs the chase didn't look promising...enter Flecknell who almost turned the game single handed, he was out (to an excellent return catch by Ben Nichols) with the score at 115-3 from 22 and despite Josh Peacock well crafted 39 and Dave Hopkins 17, the Bray challenge ran out of steam with 30 needed from the last 3 overs.

Cricket: Norris cleans up
A windy afternoon in Pagnell saw the Bray bowling first after Pagnell chose to bat and on a track with some variation in bounce the home batsmen never looked settled against the pace of Ellerton. The wickets came at the other end however as Jacobs took 2-34 before the introduction of Norris. His spell of 6-14 from 7overs meant Pagnell only posted 107 as he found some particulary nasty lift of a good length.
In reply Harris 42no and Flecknell 41 took the Bray total to 74 before Josh Peacock 15no applied the finishing touches. A good 8wicket win which sees the Bray to two wins from two and 11 wickets for Norris already.

Cricket: Peacock and Spicer stand fast
With Stoke Hammond rattling up a commanding total of 272 from their full allocation of overs, Bray 2's were always up against it in this Div 3 game. Pick of the Bray bowling was Joe Roff with 2-39 with 5 maidens and although expensive, Coughtrey also picked up 3 wickets. In reply, once Kerins was out for 39, it was time to dig in for the draw and Ryan Peacock with 21no and Phil Spicer set about grinding the bowling into submission, it definitely wasn't pretty but it got the job done...

Emergency planning needs to consider pets
Local families are being urged to remember to include their pets when drawing up plans to respond to unexpected emergencies, such as severe weather, traffic disruption or power failures.
The advice, from emergency response partners within the Bedfordshire and Luton Local Resilience Forum (BLLRF), is especially important as May half – term holiday approaches.
Chairman of BLLRF, Assistant Chief Constable Kath Govier from Bedfordshire Police said: “Emergencies, by their nature, occur when we least expect them. The police and other emergency services are always on hand to respond to such situations.
“However, every family should have its own emergency plan so that each member knows what to do when the unexpected strikes. Experience shows that people often put their own lives in danger in an effort to rescue their pets.
“Millions of people throughout the UK are currently celebrating life with their pets and spreading it is important for families to think about how they would care for their pets if their normal routine was disrupted by a serious emergency.”
BLLRF supports the ‘What would you do if...?’ campaign which aims to help everybody living or working within Bedfordshire and Luton to be prepared and consider what they would do if faced with an emergency. Log onto www.whatwouldyoudoif.co.uk.
Thank you for your support.

In reply Burton (37) and Hosking (54) carried on their early season friendly form in a partnership of 81 which took the Bray to the cusp of victory and a typically aggressive 46no from Flecknell secured the win.

Cricket: Jaco goes mad as Bray 2nds secure draw
In their first game in Div 3, Bray 2nds secured an important draw against a very strong New Bradwell team. Despite the bowling efforts of Manny Barker (taking 4-49) and hampered by an early injury to opening bowler Mike Smith Bradwell knocked up a huge 271 all out. In reply the Bray struggled early on but a one man blitz by Jaco Jacob hitting 127no from only 80balls saw the Bray to safety at 237 for 5.

Salvation Sound - May 2011
Are you of little worth ?
Matthew 10: 31. “Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows”. In the town where Ethel lived she went to her minister and asked if she could teach in Sunday School. He informed her that he thought she was too old! She was 76 years of age.
One day whilst Ethel was weeding her garden a young Chinese student from the local university stopped to comment on the flowers that were growing there. She invited him in for a cup of tea; as they talked together about their lives she had the opportunity to tell him of Jesus, and His love for her and what changes loving Him had made in her life. The next day the lad returned with another student; and so began Ethel’s ministry; because of her age the Chinese students listened to her with respect. When she died 70 Chinese believers sat together at her funeral. Yet she was thought to be to old to teach little children!
If you are still young and energetic you may find it difficult to sympathise with the feelings of older people but those of us who have passed the midpoint on lifes journey and are now on the slippery slope can appreciate what David said, “I have been young, and now am old” Psalm 37:25 and Psalm 92:14 “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age, and they shall be fat and flourishing”!
In the countryside lived an old couple; their garden was a junk yard in the literal meaning; scrap metal, wheels, bits of iron and wire were all stacked there. The old man bent through years of labour sat over a little forge battering the material into useable condition. Over the years he had amassed a small fortune, he had no need to work, but be loved what he was doing and he felt useful.
These ‘doings’ remind me of how our Saviour takes lives that so often seem useless and recycles them until a new purpose is given to them; a new value placed upon them and so through the power of God, the world is a richer place. As life takes its course we know that the bodies we now possess are prone to both aging, physical decline and eventually death; but we have been promised and have the hope of a new body, so despite our aches and pains our destiny belongs safely in the hands of Jesus. As the apostle Paul says “In an instant we shall all be changed as quickly as the blinking of an eye.”
So then my next T-Shirt will be printed with ‘20 years old but with 50+ years of experience!!

Edlesbray Leisure Fellowship - ELF
The large number of members who attended the lunch outing to The White Lion in Dunstable on 10th March agreed that they enjoyed the “new” venue. The food and the service provided was very good.
Unfortunately, the next lunch outing date has, at the moment, been cancelled. Any change will be advertised in the North Porch of Eaton Bray Church. The next Lunch outing is scheduled for July 14th.
The guided walk around College Lakes in May is unavailable as the management does not arrange walks for small groups. A few members of the walking group did enjoy a very nice walk on the 28th March around Gaddesden Row, in fine weather and with a good pub lunch in The Old Chequers.
Come and join us on 9th June at 10.30 in the Coffee Tavern in Eaton Bray for the usual tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat. Further details about future outings will be discussed.

Eaton Bray Lawn Tennis Club
Following our loss of the Tottenham Hotspur ground-share contract, life in Eaton Bray can now return to normal; there being no need to widen School Lane, park Alan Sugar’s multi-axle caravan on Moor End, or evict the Wigleys' ducks to live with ‘Arry Redknapp and his newly acquired orange grove.
It was all going according to game-plan until our Vietnamese lawyer, Phut Pholt, ran off with all our money. We suspect there’s a racquet going on between him, our Russian lawyer Braikov Zerve, and his assistant Annette Call who have been taking backhanders. It’s their fault, due to their unforced errors they’ve sold us down the line, and there’s no love lost. We’ll see them in court, appoint a receiver and smash the underhand service they’ve given us in a single stroke. There can only be one winner whatever spin they might serve up, and they won’t return to poach from us again. Let that be a lesson to them. Five years in the grand slammer would be ace. Or even double.
Meanwhile on planet Earth: Membership renewal is going well for 2011, and eight lucky members have been awarded the opportunity to buy Wimbledon tickets through the annual club draw! They will be heading down to SW19 in June with their scrumptious picnics and hopes for a British victory. Well at least the picnics won’t disappoint. Coaching continues to thrive, and we’re delighted that club coach that Sara Leavy had passed her NVQ Level 2 – congratulations Sara! Dates have been arranged for some Junior Matches, and we’re introducing a Girls under 16 team and a Mixed under 9 team, plus two Boys under 12 teams. Competition for places will be rife, and there’s always room for more juniors who’d like to be considered, so if you’d like to play some fun tennis this summer, get in touch with us, or ask your parents/guardians to call us for you!
Or... come up to our Play Tennis Day on Sunday 15th May, just a few days from when you’ll be reading this! Adults and youngsters are all welcome, just come and knock a few balls about with some of our members and see if you like it! There’s absolutely no commitment, and we’ll even provide you with a racquet, tea or coffee, and biscuits. It runs from 11.30am until 2pm so you can put the Sunday roast on, pop up to the courts for an hour, have a knock around and build up an appetite for lunch. What better way to earn your roast dinner on a warm May Sunday morning (we hope)!
Finally, our club competition kicks (sorry serves) off soon, which will see various matches played over the next four months culminating in our Grand Finals Day on Saturday 10th September. This is always an excellent day at the courts, where the sun usually shines, the crowd relaxes on a various assortment of garden furniture, and the barbecue gently sizzles, sending an aroma of burnt sausages wafting over the green.
Worth putting in your diaries now, and booking your summer holidays around it. To quote one EBLTC member: “I’d rather spend an extra couple of grand and go during the school holidays, than miss our club Final’s day”. So there’s one that will definitely be there (providing the authorities have let him out by then).
For any further information about the club, including when we get together for our social tennis sessions up at the School Lane courts, or our various activities, you can visit our website at www.ebltc.org.uk.

A New Beginning at Eaton Bray Lower School
Eaton Bray Lower School is no more – but all is not what it seems, so please read on!
The heading suggests, particularly at this time of year, new life and a fresh start, and that is exactly what is happening in Eaton Bray. Your local School became an Academy on Friday 1st April 2011.
To explain the reasons for this, I would like to take you back to the nineties. Eaton Bray School seemed constantly under threat at this time. We did not have high numbers, and in fact at times only three classrooms were in use, the fourth being ‘moth balled’ as they called it. We were regularly told that village schools were not necessary and that unless numbers increased the School would be closed. We were then given some freedom with Local Management of Schools and the creation of strong Governing Bodies. For us, this was the beginning of a new era. We were fortunate to have dedicated, committed School governors who worked with the School, and gradually we grew and developed. Our numbers increased, we designed and added a purpose built Pre School, which became part of the School, our School grounds were developed, and this year we extended the library and built a new classroom. Most importantly, we have a fantastic staff team and some of us openly admit to loving our jobs and looking forward to another Monday morning! This rubs off on our children and here are some of their quotes reported on their School census!
Tilly, “All the teachers are kind and caring”,
Sulaymaan “It’s a good place to be, the teachers try to make learning fun”.
Finlay “The best thing about EBLS is that there are lots of kind generous people”
Finally, Peter provides a list!
“The children are nice, we have fun, we learn lots of facts and the rules are fair”
As I hope you are beginning to realise, we feel Eaton Bray School is a special place and we wanted to keep it that way. With fears of cuts and changes, and so many unknowns, we felt the way forward was to become an Academy. [This was made possible because of our ‘Outstanding’ status achieved at the last OFSTED inspection].
Accordingly, the Governing Body and the whole of the School staff voted unanimously to apply for Academy status, and this was accepted by Government, and came into effect on April 1st. So, we have a new beginning, which fits well with the history of Eaton Bray as it is the 150th anniversary of Eaton Bray School this year.
I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible, and hope that staff, parents and most of all, the children will continue to enjoy Eaton Bray School. We are here to stay!

The 8th Annual Village Hall Beer Festival
Note: This article describes the 2011 event.
For details of this year's Beer Festival, please see Village Hall Events.
FRIDAY JUNE 3RD and SATURDAY 4TH JUNE 2011
Last year we did not run out of beer but, still sold more of it. We sold more burgers and hot dogs, we sold more food from the kitchen, but we sold less lager and wine!
What does this tell us? It means that more of the good people of Eaton Bray and Edlesborough are growing to appreciate the Real Ale, as chosen by our good friends from CAMRA.
Only last week a few of us had to attend a meeting with Roy Chatto and his friends (the beer experts), so over to Dunstable and the Globe pub we went. Obviously we had to have a couple of pints of real ale so we could talk about logos and the possibility of our own Festival glasses! I don't think people realise the efforts we go to in order to make the event a success!!
We will be having live music both nights and a family entertainer on the Saturday afternoon for the younger folk, so do come along and join in the fun.
There will be 25 barrels of beer, 2 types of cider, plus perry (pear cider to the uninitiated; really refreshing if a bit alcoholic).
Whilst writing this article in early April, I notice that we have sold 160 tickets for the quiz on April 30th, which we hold jointly with Eaton Bray Tennis Club. I hope another good night will be had by all. We really appreciate people coming along, as when we decided on the date we had no idea that Prince William and Kate Middleton would be getting married the day before. When the government decided to make this day a public holiday, we wondered, whether a lot of people would go on holiday after Easter and miss the quiz. However, in true local style we are nearly booked out with 4 weeks to go. Thank you all for your support.
Winners of the quiz will be announced next month but, please don't forget the BEER FESTIVAL.
If you need anymore information Please call me (Ross) on 221411.

Lions Club
A proposal to launch a new Lions club in the village of Eaton Bray has been raised by a local resident and current Lions member.
Local residents are invited to an open evening being held on Wednesday 1st June at 7pm in the Eaton Bray village hall. Here you will be able to meet some Lions members of other clubs to find out more about the worthwhile activities that Lions partake in, including youth campaigns, diabetes research medic alert, speech, sight and hearing, and our famous message in a bottle campaigns to name just a few….
You will also be able to hear first hand about the fun Lions have as members of this international organisation including dinner dances, quiz nights, club outings etc.
So why organise a new Lions club here?
Our motto is ‘We Serve’. We have more volunteers in more places than any other service organisation in the world and since 1917, Lions clubs have offered people the opportunity to give something back to the communities they live and work in and to help those in need. Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. That’s because we help when help is needed both in our own communities and around the world with un-matched integrity and energy.
Over the years as community needs have increased, Lions have also broadened their focus towards humanitarian efforts. Each Lions club is autonomous and is free to choose projects and activities that fit the lifestyle of its members and impacts the community the greatest.
So come along and meet with us at 7pm on Wednesday 1st June to find out more about the work Lions do, the proposal to launch a club in your community and to see how you can get involved.
For more information, please contact Rachel on 01525 229 656.
