Private Arthur Janes 20744 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment

Arthur was born in 1897 in Edlesborough to parents unknown.

Census in 1901 shows Arthur living as a Boarder in Bower Lane Eaton Bray with Edward Fountain and family.

1911 sees Arthur at age 13 working as a Leather Cutter and living in Kings Langley Hertfordshire with Cousin Philip Fountain and family from Eaton Bray. Earlier census show Edward as Philips father.

Not known if Arthur volunteered or was called up but his number looks very early so may have joined up under age.

Arthur died on Friday 15th September 1916 while serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment possibly at the Battle of the Somme.

Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Somme France Pier and Face 2C - This we believe to be 20744 Private Arthur Janes.
