Private William Groom 33801 Bedfordshire Regiment

William was born in Victoria Terrace Bower Lane Eaton Bray in 1897 to parents Robert Groom a Wheelwright and Avis nee Fountain.

Robert died in 1901 when William was only 3 leaving Avis to bring up the family of 5 children alone.

In 1911 whilst still living in Bower Lane William is listed as being a Wagoner on a farm.

He enlisted in Dunstable in 1916 and joined the 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment seeing action at The Somme and Morval and other battles.

On 20th November 1917 he was wounded at Cambrai and later died. Buried at Ribecourt British Cemetery Nord France Grave I B8.
