Family of David Lugsden 1864-1946
David Lugsden was born on the 29th March 1864 in Bedford Square Eaton Bray. His father Jabez was at different times a Straw Plaiter and Agricultural Labourer and his mother Deborah (nee Gadsden) a Straw Plaiter.
He married Sarah Ann Rollings on the 2nd August 1884 in Eaton Bray and set up home in the High Street working as a Livestock Labourer and Groom. David and Sarah were to have 8 children, 3 daughters and 5 sons of whom were to serve King and Country in the Great War. Only one son Jesse was to survive. That was not the end of the family loss as daughter Lizzie also lost her husband Harold Smallbones to the war in 1917.
But tragedy was to strike the family before the war as in 1907 Sarah Ann died age 45 leaving David with 8 children although only one, Arthur was still at school.
After the war at age 54 David married 30 year old Kate Clark and they were to have 5 more children, 4 daughters and 1 son. Again the luck was not with the family as 2 of the daughters did not survive infanthood and another daughter died at only age 20.
Son Frederick went on to serve in the second world war in the Royal Navy surviving to the age of 75.
A grandson of David, Ronald son of first son Albert also served in the RAF also surviving and living to the age of 89.
David died in 1946 age 82. He and Kate are burried in the same plot in Bower Lane Eaton Bray.
