The topic of conversation at winter nets last night was the state of English Cricket.
Consensus on KP sacking not that bothered.
Secretary Jones wants Sam Robinson to open with Cook but being a Middlesex fan he probably wants them all picked.
Coach Peacock thinks Morgan and Compton should come back to boost the English foreign contingent.
And Antipodean Captain Hoskins can’t hide his joy spending the entire debate laughing at the debacle.

Anyone got any thoughts.

#2029 EBCC, 6 May 2014, 18:43

New Season Starts with a Win
A week late, but the league season finally kicked off for the Eaton Bray 1st XI with a home match to newly promoted Biddenham.
In what can only be described as the perfect start the new ball bowling off Andy Norris and Joe Roff was simply too good for the Biddenham top order who got blown away to be 4 wickets for 5 runs.  All 4 wickets went to Norris deservedly so, however, the pressure built from the other end should not be ignored.  A mini fightback from the opposition followed with aggresive strokeplay seeing the middle order build a semi-respectable score, getting up to 100 for the loss of no further wickets.  Once the dangerman went to Pearson for an impressive 69, the house of cards fell down to see them all out for 127 with Pearson and Flecknell getting 2 wickets each, Jarrett took care of the only other man to reach double figures.
Chasing what should never be seen as a problematic total, the Bray top six did the job required without too many flutters of the heart.  Hosking took advantage to top score with 77*, and was joined at the end by Kerins to put on a solid partnership of 61 undefeated.
A great win, great team performance and just what the doctor ordered, the only disappointment came when the appointed fines master bailed on his task to leave his captain high and dry!

Eaton Bray At Ampthill 4ths
close

Eaton Bray At Ampthill 4ths

The Sunday Development team made the trip to Marston Moretaine to take on Ampthill in their second match of the season. The team were determined to better last week’s defeat at the hands of Great Brickhill, although they would need to do so with 10 men, as injuies and exams limit availability.

When EB finally arrived after taking many ‘scenic routes’ to try and find the ground, acting skip Peacock won the toss in the sunshine and decided to bowl, in order to use the new ball to good effect. Moss and Gauntlett opened up and bowled full and straight, rarely being hit for runs, and after a patient start Moss took the wicket of Presswell who was well caught by Sam Scott in the gully.  Moss soon struck again taking the wicket off Harris for 1. An excellent partnership followed as Ampthill youngsters Nihar and Lake rebuilt the innings with knocks of 72 and 39 respectively. Bray had toiled long and hard in the hot weather as Sirett, Sanders and Scott tried hard to get a breakthrough without much luck. There was clearly improvement from last week, with our young ‘uns line and length much improved, although it took a somewhat fortuitous run out of Lake to stem the flow. Andy Sanders extremely wayward throw to square leg prompted the batsman to run again, and with A Gauntlett’s cool head, he threw the ball easily to brother Lee who did the necessaries. Bray re-grouped brilliantly and began to make inroads, with seniors Jacobs and Peacock and then the returning A Gauntlett and Moss taking 3 more wickets, Ampthill ended 161-7, which was probably a par total. Hats off to Ampthill’s Nihar and Lake, who showed maturity beyond their years in their shot selection and placement, which was at times a joy to watch.

After tucking into their sarnies and a discussion of the batting order, the Gauntlett bro’s went out to face the music and after taking 8 in one over, Gauntlett snr was bowled for 5. Summers and Aaron proceeded to take their time and played excellently until Aaron edged behind after he had succeeded in blunting the opening attack for some time. Summers batted freely, and built a big partnership with the skip which took the tie Bray’s way, until he was run out for 28, causing some worry in the away camp. Scott snr soon followed to the bowling of the impressive Lake but young Sanders batted brilliantly in re-building again with his coach, showing hard work paying off. The skip retired at 50 leaving Bray in command. Andy played straight throughout his innings of 6 and built again with Jacobs who smacked a typically belligerent 44 not out, exciting the young Bray players with some huge hits. After Sanders edged behind, Moss came and went, but it left to Scott jnr and Jacko to see us home with a few overs to spare.

A really fantastic complete performance by The Bray, who showed patience and skill to mark their first win of the season. The future’s bright!

Well done to Aaron and Ollie who proved excellent vice captains on the day, and will continue to learn as the season goes on. Thank you also to Ampthill who played the game in the way everyone should, it was nice to see adults on both sides helping and encouraging the young lads along.

Under 10's as good as the weather
U10's impress
A bright, warm Sunday morning saw the Eaton Bray Under 10's travel to Leighton Buzzard.  After losing the toss and being asked to field, they got off to a start that matched the weather.  Bowling with a good mix of discipline and aggression, and with the fielders not missing a beat - they restricted th home side to a nett total of 142 after taking a total of 7 wickets.  The best figures being returned by Oliver Harris (1-2), Charlie Hosking (1-1) and Alfie Scott (2-3), with Liam Milne picking up another wicket to go with a couple of run-outs.  Particular mention to Thomas Maynard, Harry McMeniman and Toby Ward for taking a couple of spectacular catches and a run-out respectively.  After seeing off the half time squash, it was then their turn to bat and they carried on the impressive cricket with Toby and Thomas leading off the innings.  These two built a solid partnership, with Thomas being particularly impressive, smashing two boundaries in their partnership of 15.  This brought Harry and Oliver to the crease, who continued the good play with a partnership of 18 - the highlight being young Harris' first shot creamed to the boundary.  Charlie and Dylan Jones followed suit, with debutant Dylan being very impressive with some solid batting and good running between the wickets.  Liam and Jake Clarke came in and carried on with some good running between the wickets - both being unlucky with a few really good shots getting cut off by the fielders.  Alfie and George Hawkins sealed the deal with some explosive batting to go with some brilliant running between the wickets - George being particularly harsh on anything loose, smashing 3 great boundaries.
All in all, a really good morning's cricket.  Thanks to everyone who came to support.

1st XI suffer in the sun
The Eaton Bray 1st XI welcomed league leaders North Crawley to the Rye with the sun on their backs and a healthy dose of optimism.

Having invited the visitors to bat first, the home side was made to toil early on, with Crawley getting off to a flyer thanks to a 50 run opening partnership between Walker (81) and Young (24), followed by a 127 runs 2nd wicket stand between Walker and Armstrong (66).  With a good deal of fortitude, the Bray fought back to restrict the visitors from 1-177 to 232 all out after 43 overs and went to tea feeling pretty pleased with themselves.  Pick of the bowlers was the ever reliable James Flecknell with 6 for 51 off 9.1 overs.  Also chiming in were Andy Norris (2 for 40), Gary Ellerton (1 for 36) and Nick Pearson (1 for 55), who all bowled their hearts out as usual.
After tea, the run chase never really got going, with wickets being lost at all to regular intervals saw Eaton Bray being bowled out for a disappointing 131.  Credit should definitely be given to North Crawley who bowled and fielded too well, never releasing the pressure, however, with so many batters getting off to starts the home side should be disappointed not to have made a closer run of it.  The one shining light for Eaton Bray being the clean hitting of Richard Osbourne who made his best score for the 1st's with a total of 22.

1st XI batting folds again

Elstow too good

Eaton Bray first XI travelled to Elstow on Saturday in what proved to be a dreadfully one-sided affair.  On what looked like a wet and wild seamer, the Bray skipper Hosking got the call right at the toss and asked the home side to bat.  After making early inroads thanks to the aggression and discipline of Roff (2-27) and Norris (1-37) the home side was on the ropes at 15-2.  They then battened down the hatches to show the Bray batsmen how to do it, showing good application mixed with aggressive running between wickets and a lack of tolerance for the loose ball to end their innings after 44 overs at 7-215.  The bowlers stuck to their task well with Flecknell (2-38) and Jarrett (1-59) being the other wicket takers in the innings, and the visitors went to the tea break with a fair bit of optimism for the run chase.

The optimism was very short lived however, as the 1st wicket went 2nd ball and many followed soon after, at one stage the batting side were 42-6 in a burst that saw some poor shots, some good bowling, some poor umpiring and a hat-trick.  Jacobs being the only one to get to a half-decent total with a fighting 30 before the home umpire had seen enough of him also.  When it was all said and done, Eaton Bray had folded to be 88 all out in a game where they were comfortably 2nd in all departments.  A big three home games loom as they face an uphill battle to regain control of their season, things can only get better.

U10's Impress in Defeat

Biggleswade too good

The Eaton Bray Under 10's welcomed Biggleswade to a sunny Rye Gardens for what proved to be an impressive display from both sides.  Having lost the toss, the home side were invited to bat, and it soon became clear why, as the visitors were a well drilled, disciplined and talented unit who made life hard for the batsmen all the way through.  However, the Bray boys were not to be intimidated, and stuck to their guns, batting with good intent and patience to end their innings on a nett total of 125 (after losing 9 wickets).  It was an innings where, if not for the exceptional fielding from the visitors, and a bit of luck could well have been 50 runs more.

Not to be outdone, Eaton Bray started their fielding effort with much gusto, picking up 3 wickets in the first 2 overs.  Biggleswade fought back, and proved to be too good on the day finishing with a nett 159 (8 wickets), but the home side should be incredibly proud of themselves with the way they played the game.  Disciplined bowling, good fielding and brilliant teamwork were par for the day.

First ever win!
The U14's recorded their first ever win on Tuesday night, at The Rye Gardens versus Aspley Guise.

Sam Scott, captain for the evening, won the toss and batted first, although Bray were in trouble early on as Sirett, Shrowder and Ritchie all succumbed to Dawson, who bowled very straight in returning figures of 3-8 from his four overs, and at 10-3 things weren't looking too healthy. Bailey Roberts and the skip started the recovery soon after, ensuring that straight balls were defended and taking their time to see off the opening bowlers. Bailey hung around with his skip, who was the agressor, but fell for 4 contributing to an excellent partnership of 35, which began to retsotre some pride and confidence in the team. Sam was playing the perfect captain's knock, mixing concentration with attacking intent, which saw the ball flying to the boundary on a frequent basis, and was being helped along by Jack Cullen, who like Roberts, played well in rotating the strike and defending, until he was, perhaps a little harshly, adjudged LBW to Roberston for 5, another worthy partnership. Sam retired just after 30* but was soon back in as Ben Cullen and Luis Acosta departed, but Bray weren't finished yet. 7 year old Charlie Hosking came in and batted superbly against players nearly twice his age, playing with maturity in defending the satraight ones but also hitting bad balls to the boundary alongside his captain. Our little and large partnership nearly saw off all the overs, until Charlie was out for a well played 11, in the process seeing his skip to a fantastic knock of 52*, his first (hopefully of many) half century. The U14's went in at the break 101 all out, the first time they'd also reached a ton as a team.

The fielding innings started well, with debutant Matt Hill and J Cullen bowling tight overs, and again Acosta and B Cullen who carried on the good work, Luis removing opener Proctor for 1, courtesy of a well taken catch by Karl. The innings then began to turn Aspley's way as opening batsman Dahal and number 3 Dawson began to chase down our total. Dawson, who had been the chief tormentor with the ball, retired on 30, as the game reached the close. The tide turned again though, as Sam inrtoduced himself to the attack, bowling Dehal for a well played 25, which allowed Bray to make inroads. Aspley were just behind the scoring rate, and with the now reliable Hosking, bowling very straight and keeping the runs down, the game entered its climax.

With the game into its last over, Sam threw the ball to Matthew, with Aspley needing 10 from 6 balls to win. As coach Josh and all the parents began to wonder what may be, Matthew started his over perfectly, bowling Nicholls for 1, but the fun wasn't over there. Next ball 4 byes just to keep things interesting! He followed it up with a dot (6 from 3) and then took the wicket of Robertson for 0 and followed it with a dot and 1 run to spark some excitable celebrations as Bray went wild!

A brilliant performance from both teams, with an excellent game being played the correct way. Neither team deserved to lose.

Thanks to Nirav and his team for playing in exactly the way that we are trying to play at Eaton Bray. Look forward to seeing them again.

~~Eaton Bray beat Thurleigh

EBCC welcomed Thurleigh to the Rye on a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon.  Having lost the toss and being invited to bat, the innings was set up superbly by openers Harris (79) and Norris (85) in a partnership of 166 with both players enjoying the good deck and fast outfield.  Once they went in reasonably quick succession, Jacobs (19), Hosking (19) and Flecknell (15 n.o.) had the enviable and all too rare job of lifting the run rate in the last 10 overs.  The Eaton Bray innings was declared at 229 for 4 off 42 overs, special mention to Richard Osbourne who blocked and ducked the last 3 balls of the innings.
After tea, the visitors set about the run chase with aggression, going at around 6 runs per over in an opening stand of 73, taking the game to the Bray.  Upon the introduction of the fermented Jacobs, things swung quickly back in the home teams favour as he ripped the heart out of the Thurleigh batting line up.  Once the opening stand was broken, wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals to see them all out for 153 off 35.5 overs.  Best figures were Jacobs (4-23 off 7), Osbourne (2-25 off 5) and Roff (2-43 off 7.5).

Under 10's power on
The Eaton Bray Under 10's welcomed Ampthill to the Rye on a warm, sunny Sunday morning.  Having provided the visitors with 3 players, captain Toby lost the toss and was asked to bat first, and then the fun began.  After a good start from Nathaniel and Taylor who ran and called well to go with some good shots, Liam and Gabe walked in and started the fireworks show, good running combined with destructive hitting  - including a massive six from Gabe took the partnership to 39 off their 4 overs.  Ollie and Shamindra continued the good work, both hitting boundaries and running well to put on 36.  In came Toby and Freya who complemented each other well with a mix of alertness, clean striking and solid defences.  George and Sam finished the innings with a performance that had the spectators in awe - their partnership included 7 boundaries, 7 singles and a few 2's - all adding up to a partnership of 49.  The Eaton Bray nett total finishing at 247.
After the interval, and a rousing captains speech later - the team took to field to defend their impressive total - and quickly decided attack was the best form of defence.  Picking up wickets at regular intervals, and brilliant fielding giving away nothing, all bowlers kept a tight line and length.   All players deserve credit for never letting the opposition get close.  Wickets going to Sam (1-5), Shamindra (2-13), Ollie (2-7), Nathaniel (1-19), Taylor (1-16), Liam (1-8) and Gabe (1-19).  Special mention for the tight bowling of Toby (0-5), Freya (0-9) and George (0-9) all combining well to restrict the opposition to 165.
Well done to all the Eaton Bray players for performing admirably for the opposition also, Charlie, Harry and Ben all playing at their customary high levels in the tough situation of playing against their team mates.

U14's push Henlow all the way
What started as a damp night at the Rye cleared quickly to leave time for a 18over a side match between the Bray U14 and Henlow B.  Henlow batted first and some bold stroke play saw them reach 79-5 off the first 12overs.  The wickets were shared equally between Scott, Sanders, J Cullen, Hill and Acosta before young Ben Cullen turned the screw with 3 wickets in 2 overs to restrict Henlow to 98 from their 18.  For Henlow Hidle (13) and Sale (11) starred with the bat.

In reply the Bray looked good with Scott (27) and Sanders (9) at the crease, but the loss of Sanders shortly after impaling himself on his bat (dont ask!) meant the reply stuttered and only some late order hitting from Sirett (24) in partnership with the dogged young Hosking saw the Bray close...22 needed off the last over proved just too much with the boys coming up 6 runs short.

A galant effort and another great game played in the right spirit, our thanks go to Henlow for making the trip despite the thunder storms.
