Over the next few months I can do geneology look ups, bmd and some census for Eaton Bray. I will do your research in return for a charitable donation, you decide how much to give (£1 minimum), I in turn request donations to
www.justgiving.com/janetickell
The chosen charity is Iain Rennie Hospice At Home (reg. charity No. 297847) and all your monies donated through this site go directly to them.

Hi Bernie,
I'd be interested if you have any parish register info for the Brown family from Eaton Bray. I've traced them back to George Brown, a wheelwright born around 1680.
Kind Regards
Liz

Hi Bernie, thank you for your kind offer. I am researching the Cobb family, who have roots in the Eaton Bray area in the first half of the 1800s and maybe before.
There are two marriages I am interested in finding out more about, both involve a Thomas Cobb and I'm wondering if they involve the same Thomas Cobb (marrying for a second time after the death of his first wife?). The first marriage was on 20 Oct 1803, when Thomas Cobb married Ann Read at Eaton Bray according to the IGI. The second was on 27 Jul 1818, this time Thomas Cobb and Sarah Humbles. Any information on those marriages, particularly whether Thomas of 1818 was noted as a bachelor or a widower, would be very helpful (and if he was a widower, is there a burial for Ann his first wife some time before 1818?).
Any other records of the Cobb family at Eaton Bray would also be of interest of course.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
Steve

POSTED A THREAD ON GENES REUNITED AND GOT THIS REPLY
I am doing some research and wondered if anyone can help me again please.
Thomas Cobb married Ann Read in Eaton Bray Beds on the 20th of october 1803.There is a second marriage on the 27th of July 1818 also in Eaton Bray Beds. Can anyone see if Thomas on the second marriage is a widower or a batchelor. If he is a widower is there a death for Ann pre 1818.
Thank you
Bernie
Sorry second marriage is to Sarah Humbles
Hi, I was hoping that the children's baptisms would help, but Ann doesn't seem to have had one after 1816... Ann BUT there is a burial for an Ann Cobb aged 33 on 4/6/1817 at St Mary the Virgin Eaton Bray, also for Ann aged 2 on 26/4/1818 They sound likely contenders for those you are looking for. Thomas didn't waste much time remarrying, but I suppose he needed someone to look after young John then aged 5!!
Thomas and Sarah seem to have had a at least two children.
Hope this helps. Eileen

Hi Bernie - and wow! Thanks for all that info. Yes, the Thomas Cobb who married Sarah Humbles was almost certainly the one on the 1841 and 1851 census returns and therefore born in Wing over in Bucks. The line I'm trying to trace back is that of Thomas Cobb baptised 20 Mar 1808, which is why I'm trying to establish whether Thomas who married Sarah Humbles is the same one who married Ann Read as he would then be the father of Thomas of 1808. The burial record for Ann in 1817 does make it seem that the 1818 marriage was Thomas taking a second wife. If you are able to find the 1818 marriage details from post-1812 transcripts or other records that would be brilliant, but what we have so far is good data and I will certainly try to track down a baptism for Thomas Cobb in Wing. His birth would have been around 1777 - I wonder if he was a son of the Thomas Cobb and Sarah Durrant who married in 1775, they may have taken up residence in Wing after their marriage? Thanks again, Steve
#94 Steve, 26 November 2009, 18:31
Bernie - I now have details of the Thomas Cobb / Sarah Humbles marriage and Thomas' marital status was not given. On the balance of probabilities I'd say it was the same Thomas marrying twice so Thomas of Wing is the next ancestor to trace. Except that the only Cobb baptism at Wing appears to be a William Cobb in 1772 - possibly a brother of Thomas? Thanks again for your help Bernie, I will head over to the justgiving site and make a donation. Steve

Thank you very much for your donation Steve and good luck with your search.I will keep an eye out for Thomas and William.Never know what may turn up. Bernie

Bernie - you contacted me regarding the Cobb family but I was afraid I was unable to add anything to your research. But I wondered if you were able to help me with another part of that family. I have a Mary Sanders in my family tree who I understand was born in Eaton Bray and married a George Irons in Edlesborough. (their son David Irons married Ruth Cobb in 1874) Think she may have been born around 1809. Do you have any record of her in the parish records. Many thanks
Judy

#415 Liz, 6 July 2010, 12:48
Hi Bernie,
Thanks so much for all those lookups on the Brown family. I will make a donation to the charity. I had forgotten all about my request as life is very busy with 3 young kids but remembered to check the other day and saw all the lookups you had done. Some of the records I was aware of but some are new and was particularly interested in the 16 century records which imply my family have been in Eaton Bray since Tudor times. It is a shame there seems such a big gap in records between then and the beginning of the 18 century. I actually have a copy of the will of George Brown, the wheelwright born around 1680 who was married to Mary and whose children are detailed in the baptism records from Sam in 1705 to Luke in 1725. He lived at Chiltern View Farm in Eddlesborough which I believe still exists (though not as a farm). I think he may have been the son of Samuel Brown and Sarah. George's great grandchild, Sam Brown (my great x 4 grandfather)was a blacksmith in Eaton Bray and ran the Five Bells pub there. I wondered whether the Five Bells has any records of previous victuallers? Sam's son, John (married to Sophia), took over running the pub in 1861. Sam was also an overseer of the poor. Sam married 3 times surviving two of his wives He died aged 81 on 31st August 1861 in some kind of accident that also killed his 3rd wife, Sophia, a few days later. I wondered if there were any records such as newspaper reports or inquest details? I know there was an inquest held as it is mentioned in the death certificate, coroner Eizra Eagles, but all the death certificate says is that he died of injuries accidentally received. Unfortunatly I am in Australia so cannot get to the places to look them up. The Browns were blacksmiths in Eaton Bray from Richard, (son of George, born 1717) the last one being George Brown (born 1866) brother, to my great grandfather, Albert. He was married to Eliza and had a son George. He was still a blacksmith in Eaton Bray in 1911 with his brother Edwin William. I believe he worked at the Old Forgery in Eaton Bray.
Thanks so much again for all your work.

Hello Bernie,
I was wondering if you could kindly check the Parish Register for the surname Sanford, sometimes spelt Sandford or Stanford among others. I am looking for my family ancestors in the region for the period of the late 1500's through to the 1600's.
Thankyou Darren
#681 Bernie, 29 November 2010, 16:42
Hi Darren.....Sorry can't find any of the names you are seeking. The nearest I can find are Stafford (2)and Stanniford (1).Have a look on the genealogy page where the names are listed.
#684 Darren, 30 November 2010, 02:08
Bernie, Thankyou for your help. The Befordhshire Prime Index had indicated there was a Stanford listed, obviously this included spelling variants. I just found the genealogy page. The names you referred to appear to be spelt too differently from the name I'm searching to be a mispelling. Darren

I am researching the LEACH family from Totternhoe. I seem to be stuck on Thomas LEACH b circa 1821 and I have him in the 1840 survey living in Western End. I see some Leachs may have come from Eaton Bray too. Any info or leads would be very appreciated. I also have a James LEACH B circa 1813? and I am having trouble proving any family connection. I am particularly interested in finding a path to Thomas' parents.
Thankyou

Hi Chris...The records we have to hand are dated 1559-1812 and do have the Leach family in Eaton Bray. Will start posting.Checked out Totternhoe records for the same dates but there are no Leach's.Have looked on the IGI and think we may have found something.

Have you thought about the possibility that Thomas & James may have been half brothers. Can't find a death for Ann yet but all 5 baptisms that I can find in Totternhoe for Leach involve fathers name being John.
#706 Chris, 10 December 2010, 07:19
That's a brilliant start! thank you. I am planning a visit to Totternhoe over the next month and I know Eaton Bray is very close. It was Thomas (b 1821) that had a son who moved into Dunstable then into Battersea, London. Thomas is my GGG grandfather, It seems that Thomasdied quite young snd the sons were raised by John HOLT (another Totternhoe family) in Dunstable. John HOLT probably married Thomas Leach's sister Martha. Also in 1829 survey of Totternhoe the property that bacame Thomas Leach's in 1840 was owned by a John LEACH so that fits too. Any more you can find fully appreciated and donation going in!
#707 Chris, 10 December 2010, 07:44
I wonder if Thomas's father John is NOT connected to Eaton Bray then? Possibly coming from a LEACH family in/near Leighton Buzzard? Or is my thought process wrong? Also on the half brother idea, that makes sense too since Thomas's property and James' property were virtually next door to each other, just off 'Leach's lane' according to te 1840 map of Totternhoe.
#710 Chris, 10 December 2010, 09:46
also!! could you list the 5 baptisms in totternhoe you mentioned? I am aware of only 2 of thomas' generation/age
#719 Tom n Harry, 10 December 2010, 18:42
Apart from Thomas & James there is....... Martha Leach 27th Nov 1814 Totternhoe Beds to parents John Leach & Ann...Jonah Leach about 14th July 1816 Totternhoe Beds to parents John Leach & Ann...Martha Leach birth 18th Jan 1823 baptised 18th May 1823 to parents John Leach & Mary...Jonahs record is not extracted from parish records so will need some checking. If both marriages I posted earlier are the same John it looks like Martha 1814 died as an infant.
#720 Tom n Harry, 10 December 2010, 18:52
Found some later marriages in Eaton Bray on the Hugh Wallis site. You may already have these........Rebecca Leach to James Musket 26th Nov 1821 Eaton Bray...James Leach to Mary Webb 23rd Aug 1831 Eaton Bray...John Leach to Elizabeth Holmes 10th Nov 1853 Eaton Bray...
#721 Tom n Harry, 10 December 2010, 19:03
More baptisms in Eaton Bray on Hugh Wallis all at the Wesleyan Chapel........Thomas Leach birth 22nd May 1828 baptism 13th June 1828 Eaton Bray to parents Benjamin Leach & Patience...James Leach birth 23rd March 1835 baptism 16th April 1835 Eaton Bray to parents Benjamin Leach & Patience Bates...John Leach birth 5th April 1833 baptism 18th Nov 1833 Eaton Bray to parents James Leach & Mary Webb.
#727 Tom n Harry, 13 December 2010, 09:39
Chris...re your email on Valentine...
There is a record on family search (IGI)for Valentine Leach male birth about 1708 Billington Beds but it is not an extracted record. It also has a burial 9th December 1805....Another one looks more promising , Valentine Leech baptism 5th January 1710 Edlesborough Bucks father Richard Leech.
#728 Tom n Harry, 13 December 2010, 09:50
First marriage I can find for Valentine local is 1807 again not an extracted record...Only marriage for a Valentine to Elizabeth 5th November 1659 Attleborough Norfolk...Maybe a bit early.
#729 Chris, 14 December 2010, 07:58
thats brilliant. I have looked through all the listings and there seems a clear logic tree. I am pretty sure there is also a link between Valentine and the other Leachs in leighton Buzzard/Billington as there seems to be a generation 'gap' covering the mid 1700's. Is there any more info around the area? Is there much Leach info in and around Edlesborough which, although is another county is very close. I have found a possible Wesleyan connection later on in 1803 in Billington if that helps? There seems to be an awful lot of children that are so far untracable. I can't thank you enough for your time and effort in assisting me. If you know of anyone else researching this family feel free to send them my details.
