sorry I am looking for the childred of william archie and florence

#274 Tom n Harry, 17 March 2010, 15:29

Only have very early parish records from 1559-1812.The records you are looking for around 1920s will be on microfiche at Beds Records Office....
There is a cemetary in Bower Lane as you come into the village. It looks empty but it is in fact so full that the parish council are looking for more land. Most of the markers were made of wood and have rotted over the years so many graves are now unmarked. We are hoping to have a database for Bower Lane very soon.....Will have a look for Children of William Archie and Florence on Ancestry.

In this book you can find a section on George Sharratt, a up and coming business man who was the owner of the Ogden City Floral Company , who arrived on the shores on the New World on the 10th August 1906 and made his way straight to Utah he took out naturalization papers and became a citizen of Ogden in 1918 in 1922 he must have been on a visit with his daughter Dorothy, thanks for your info Tom n Harry

#298 Tom n Harry, 4 April 2010, 16:39

There are 2 births for Rose Bird in Bedfordshire December 1876,1 in Luton and the other which is your Rose in Leighton Buzzard so death could be Rose reg Luton.......Did your Rose have a middle name?

#301 Tom n Harry, 5 April 2010, 11:42

Thought Rosa might have gone to America as well but cant find her on Ellis Island. Nothing in Hendon with Gertrude either.Could have moved in with Laura And Arthur.Might be worth you posting on GR for an electrol roll look up.I think there is a thread on there that will do it......On another note have you seen photos on the history page. There is a photo of Eaton Bray football team from the 50s with a Bill Sharratt top left.Could be one of yours.

#307 susan, 8 April 2010, 18:05

Found out Gertrude went to America in 1930,a widow to join her sister Ruth who  married an American Joseph Curran , Ruth came and took Constance Horton to America in 1912 ruth and her husband adopted Constance so she became a Curran, In the American census, Ruth was a widow living with Gertrude and Constance. Ruth married Jospeh in America  in 1904 Illinois, Have not got a clue where she may have met him, thought I would share this info. Will take your tip about Rosa/Rose

#308 Tom n Harry, 12 April 2010, 07:49

Susan...Dont know if you have seen it, but there is another site for Eaton Bray. They have a good photo album and page 15 shows Yew Tree Farm owned by the Sharratts.

#1961 tim, 20 February 2014, 14:24

For anyone interested, I have information about William Archibald Horton, born 1893 in Leighton Buzzard, written by one of his daughters.

#3473 Mark, 15 January 2017, 22:44

Tim, I would be interested in any information you have on William Archibald Horton.  My grandmother was Constance Horton Curran and she had said that her brother Archie was gassed during WW1 and never fully recovered and died in the 1920s.

Susan, Constance Horton (I will refer to her as "Grammy") was born on April 29, 1906 and came to America on the "Carmania".  She said that she doesn't remember her birth parents since they died when she was young.  It is interesting that her mother was still alive until the early '50s and I don't believe she was aware of this.  She said that she had lived with her grandparents on "Great Green Farm" in Eaton Bray and that her grandfather, Fred Bird, was always very kind and understanding to her. It sounds liker her grandmother, Martha Bird, was very strict.  She was adopted by Ruth Bird and Joseph Curran who took her to America in 1912.  She said that they were booked passage on the Titanic but it was changed when her grandfather got ill.  Ruth (born on Dec. 2, 1871 in Northal, died in 1955) and Joe (born on March 19, 1871 in Middletown, Ohio, died in 1929) met in St. Louis, Missouri when he went to the train station to meet her and her Aunt Hannah, whom he knew.  Grammy grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Grammy married William H. Fry on September 4, 1936.  They had four children, Linda, Roger, Alan and Alison.  Linda is my mother.  I knew Aunt Gertie and she lived with us briefly when I was young.  She would push my brother and me around the block in the carriage.  Aunt Gertie lived with my grandparents in Cincinnati, Ohio and died in 1975.  Grammy died in 1996.  I was very close with her and I miss her very much.  This is probably more information than you wanted but it gives you an idea where Grammy ended up in America.  I've got a number of photos of the Bird family, including you grandfather Alfred, which I would be happy to share with you.  I would be interested in any other information you have on the Bird/Horton side.

#3490 Charlotte Easteer, 16 April 2017, 02:04

Edlesborough parish register transcripts can be found on Ancestry. Also on familysearch.org which is free to use.

Hi Susan,

I am a Sharratt descendant. My 2nd great-grandmother was Mary Ann Sharratt who married David Rollings. They came to Ogden, Utah in 1852 and my great-grandmother Elizabeth Jane was born there. Her husband Joseph Thomas Johnson may have been responsible for George Sharratt coming to Ogden. Both of George's daughters have passed on but there are descendants. George and Elizabeth Jane would have been first cousins once removed.

#3564 Monica Wyatt, 22 March 2019, 23:46

Hi Susan
I have just discovered this forum. I am the granddaughter of William Archie Horton and Florence Lewis, my mother was Valda Constance Horton born in 1914. She died in 2009. She had a sister Ivy born in 1916. My mother always said she was named Constance after her aunt. Florence met Archie while in service to his aunt in Eaton Bray. My mother told me that her father had been "taken away" when she was about 5 to a hospital, she was told he suffered from neurasthenia. She had no contact with him after. She lived with her mother Florence and her mothers family in Wealdstone. Valda then married my father Charles Cecil Wyatt in 1941  and they had two daughters, myself born in 1946 and my elder sister Jennifer born in 1943. Before my mother died we tried to follow up some family records but didn't get far. I would be very interested to pursue this with you

#3565 monica, 23 March 2019, 08:43

Mark, we are apparently "cousins"your grandmother Constance and my grandfather Archie would have been brother and sister. My mother Valda, was Archie Hortons daughter from his marriage to Florence Lewis. She always told us she was named Valda Constance, Constance after her aunt, though this name did not in fact appear on her birth certificate. She was born in 1914 and died in 2009. I never knew my grandfather Archie who was taken into hospital (asylum) when she was very young, 5 or 6. I have one photo of my mother very young on his lap at a family wedding.

#3566 Simon Wyatt, 23 March 2019, 21:09

Hello all,
Setting the stage, Monica’s Dad was my Grandad’s brother.  I noted in the above discussion that Alfred Horton married Ann Turvey and that Walter Horton was their son.  It seems that Alfred and Ann were married at Tottenhoe in 1861.   When I searched for their names and the place, I discovered an excellent source (link below) that may show Ann Turvey, age 3, living with Thomas Turvey(65), Harriet Turvey (35) etc.  They are recorded as living plot 44...there is a beautiful map of the village which shows the plot.  More Turveys live at plot 66 and also plot 32.  If you scroll down further to plot 170, the Dukes Head public house.  Here you have Hortons!!  No Alfred, but, a William aged 5.  Could be a case of William (Alfred)?

http://bedsarchives.bedford.gov.uk/CommunityArchives/Totternhoe/1841CensusForTotternhoe.aspx

#3567 Simon Wyatt, 23 March 2019, 21:21

ok, I seen now in the 1861 census recording Alfred and Ann, that Alfred was born in Buckinghamshire, perhaps there I was clutching at straws

#3568 Simon Wyatt, 23 March 2019, 21:28

Alfred was from Dagnall only 4.8 miles from Totternhoe

#3569 susan odell, 24 March 2019, 11:44

Hi Monica I have lots on William Archie Horton he was admitted to the Three Counties Lunatic Asylum in 1920 and died there on the 29  may 1983 I have his whole hospital records for the time he was there. He received no visitors also his mother LOUISA HORTON was also there be admitted in 2Feb 1910 and died in there in 1952 aged 82 I have all her hospital records too. very sad in both cases. I have some pics of Louisa  and other info on the Hortons Alfred Horton was my grandad  a wonderful man

#3570 susan odell, 24 March 2019, 11:54

Hi Mark I remember your mother Linda when she came to the Uk with Auntie Connie and stayed with Nanny n Grandad we had a get together at my Mum n Dads house which I have pics of. It’s strange that Louisa was never spoken of and very sad that both her son and herself were institunalised for so many years I have a pic of Louisa at a family wedding she was a handsome lady and more info you require I will be happy to help

#3571 susan odell, 24 March 2019, 12:42

Monica fogot to state when Louisa was admitted in 1910 on her admission records Archie Horton was also a patient there I do not know when he was discharged. I think Louisa could have been suffering from post natal depression because Reginald was born 1909 and her husband Walter had died 1908

#3572 monica, 24 March 2019, 16:39

Hi Susan
So your Grandad and mine, Archie, were Brothers!? Such a pity all this didn't happen while my mother Valda was alive. She was trying to find out more about her fathers family late in her life and feeling upset that she had not shown any interest before. I think her mother Florence dissuaded the daughters when they were younger from seeking any contact, feeling it would upset them.

#3573 susan odell, 25 March 2019, 17:58

Hi Monica if I can help you with any info will be pleased to help

#3574 susan odell, 29 March 2019, 18:59

Hi Monica I have just looked on the Eaton Bray history page and there is a picture of Archie Horton in the football team dated 1907 thought I would let you know

#3576 monica, 1 April 2019, 21:26

Thankyou Susan, I checked the photo. Kind of strange feeling to see a young boy who was a grandad I never met.

Hi Susan
I would be interested in seeing my grandads hospital records. It's all very much in my mind since I've had all this info. Not sure how we can be in touch apart from this forum. My address is Monica Wyatt 24 Avenue de la Mer 11200 Thezan des Corbieres France. I am coming to the uk for about 8 days in June and again in early October.

Horton burials in Edlesborough crypt

#3610 Chris Roddis, 1 December 2019, 14:57

The first post in this thread mentions Hortons being buried in Edlesborough crypt. Do you have any evidence for this? There are several burials of them in the graveyard, I have entered them onto findagrave.com, but I have not found anything about the crypt. I belong to Friends of the Church on the Hill and we are interested in all aspects of its history.

Hi Susan
I am wondering if you still look at this forum, I would very much like to have my grandfathers hospital records, or a copy if that could be arranged. I am continuing my ancestry research.
