Hi
I am researching the fountaine family due to an embroidery sampler made by a 'Charlotte Fountaine' in 1820 I bought whilst on holiday!
I have done quite a bit of research on the IGI website....but am now a bit lost....
I believe that John Fountaine (born 1785) married Elizabeth Shepherd (1791) in 1809 and had daughter Charlotte later in 1809 - Johns family was quite large including brothers/sisters Elizabeth (1787), Charlotte (1789), Samuel (1795) and Richard (1798); also possible other brothers/sisters are Sarah (1783), James (1791), Samuel (1793), Thomas (1793) and William (1800)
Please can anyone confirm the marriage and death of the charlotte fountaine (born 1809)mentioned above and if she had any siblings?
Also can anyone confirm FOR DEFINATE the marriage of John and Elizabeth and their children....or at least which ones i have correct??
Many thanks
Sarah xxx

Sarah...Have searched Eaton Bray Parish Registers and have found John & siblings baptisms in years that you state, parents being John Fountain & Ann Gayton...Marriage for John & Ann November 12th 1782 Eaton Bray...Found John & Elizabeths marriage on IGI as 14th January 1809 at Luton Beds but there is no record in Eaton Bray for Banns....We only have records for parish from 1559-1812 but found baptisms for...July 16th 1809 Charlotte daughter of John & Elizabeth Fountain...May 28th 1811 Sarah daughter of John & Elizabeth Fountain...Will carry on searching.

Do you know who Charlotte married?...Only one I can find that fits local is December 1839 reg Leighton Buzzard to either Joseph Abraham or George Brill.

Hi again
Forgot to mention i have since found possible siblings to charlotte fountaine with parents John and Elizabeth....please can you check the register and see if these are as Elizabeth Shepherd or if you think they will be DEFInETE siblings to Charlotte
Ann 1813
George and John 1817
thanks again

Hi Sarah...Saw Ann & George on Hugh Wallis IGI site which is usually very accurate...There was another one named John 6th March 1813 to John & Elizabeth Fountain but seems strange to have two baptisms in same year...The E on fountain could be miss transcribed but my Parish Records only go to 1912 so cant confirm if these are right siblings to Charlotte.
#387 Tom n Harry, 2 June 2010, 19:43
Sorry ...Johns baptism should read 2nd March 1817
#388 Tom n Harry, 2 June 2010, 20:09
Is there anything else on the sampler to give any clues.....And sorry again records only go to 1812..Must have had too much sun
#389 sarah kane, 2 June 2010, 21:34
no thats about it....it is just a typical sampler with the name Carlotte Fountaine 1820
Normally girls are 8-15 when making samplers and there are 2 on the IGI the right age....a Charlotte Fountains 1808, london and Charlotte Fountain 1809 eaton bray....this one in 1809 has an auntie on the IGI i have traced who goes by the name of Charlotte Fountaine (With the e!) BORN IN 1789 sister to John who was charlotte 1809's father (confusing!)....the E on her aunt was the thing which made me think it WAS the 1809 charlotte and NOT the other one.....in 1808

I have Eaton Bray Fountains both on my maternal and paternal lines. I also have a book The Fountains of Cottesloe and of Eaton Bray with Faulkener connections compiled and written by Harold Faulkener Oct 2000.
One ofmy Fountains owned The Fountain public house. Ill follow the tree through. If you want - let me have your email address I will copy the tree that applies to you. 3 generations from John Fountain 1732

Sarah....Dont worry too much about the spelling my end on the records.Charlottes family probably spelt their name with an "E" but as most of the population of the time could not read or write it was down to the vicar how names were spelt on baptism records.Because of this the families could not confirm to him that the name was registered correct. The same problem happens on census returns especially after a pub..........Jane..Thank you for your help now and I hope in the future.

I have recently started to trace my maternal family tree and have discovered that my Great, Great, Great Grandmother was called Eliza Ann Fountain from Eton Bray who I believe married George Duncombe also of Eaton Bray but I have been unable to trace her family any further back, does anybody know if there is a connection with this thread please ?
#471 Tom n Harry, 26 July 2010, 20:12
Hi Craig...Have found Eliza Ann on the 1841 census. Her parents were Richard Fountain and I think Susanna Gadsden. She was a cousin of Charlotte. Will send census later.
#472 Tom n Harry, 26 July 2010, 20:41
Just found another Eliza Ann born Eaton Bray 1835 whose parents are William & Sarah.Do you have any clues as to the right one?
#478 Craig Lucas, 27 July 2010, 10:24
Hi,
Thanks for your help, the info I have is that she was born 1834/35 so I think William & Sarah were her parents, she married a George Duncombe also from Eaton Bray in about 1857 I believe.
#480 Tom n Harry, 27 July 2010, 10:38
Think the relationship to Charlotte is still cousin as Eliza Ann 1835 father William was a brother to the above family. Will look at census and BMDs if you want them.
#481 Craig Lucas, 27 July 2010, 12:08
Thank you, any help is very much appreciated, do you have any info on George Duncombe ?
#483 Tom n Harry, 27 July 2010, 21:15
Found the marriage for George to Eliza Ann Fountain 15th August 1857 Eaton Bray Beds and can find them both on 1861 census but then Eliza vanishes.Cant find a death for her but another marriage for George on 11th Feb 1865 Eaton Bray Beds to a Matilda Goodman who then appears on all census to 1891.Must be the same George.
#484 Tom n Harry, 28 July 2010, 06:34
Looks like it is the same George.Death for Eliza Ann Duncomb reg Leighton Buzzard Sept 1863 3b 281.
#491 Craig Lucas, 28 July 2010, 09:35
It looks like she may have died giving birth as I have her daughter as being born in 1863.
#493 Tom n Harry, 28 July 2010, 09:44
Which daughter Craig...I cant seem to find her.
#494 Craig Lucas, 28 July 2010, 13:55
I have Eliza Ann Duncombe born in Eaton Bray in 1863.
#501 Tom n Harry, 29 July 2010, 07:35
Sorry Craig but I cant find a birth for an Eliza Ann Duncombe. The only thing I can see for 1863 is the death of Eliza Ann....Have posted George on another thread. Its all I have at the moment but will carry on searching.
#502 Tom n Harry, 29 July 2010, 09:26
Craig...Have just found baptism for Eliza Ann Duncomb 24/08/1863 but still cant find her registration.
#504 Tom n Harry, 1 August 2010, 20:46
Sent an email to Beds Records Office & got this reply...
Thank you for your email.
The baptism of Eliza Ann Duncomb took place, together with her sister Minnie (who was born in 1861), on 24th August 1863 at Eaton Bray as you are aware. She and her sister are shown as the daughters of George and Eliza Ann Duncomb of Eaton Bray. George was a labourer.
A burial of Eliza Ann Duncomb, aged 28, took place the day before at Eaton Bray churchyard. Presumably she was the wife of George and the mother of both Eliza Ann and Minnie. I could not find, as you could not find, a birth record for Eliza Ann but there is one for Minnie in 1861. Neither could I find a marriage between George Duncomb and Eliza Ann.
George did remarry in February 1865 to Matilda Goodman at Eaton Bray. He was recorded as a widower and by 1871 they were, as you probably know, residing at Islington.
I hope the above helps.
Yours sincerely,
Trevor Cunnick

I came across this thread because I was tryign to find out more about the ancestors of my maternal grandfather, Henry FOUNTAIN NEWMAN. he is listed in the 1911 Census as being born 1883 in Eaton Bray.
I do not want to hijack this thread, but was wondering if there is any link t the FOUNTAIN(E) family already mentioned?

Posting 390 - is there anyway I could get a copy of Jane Bishop's info she lists above, happy to pay postage costs etc. This may help me find out details about my John Fountaine 1677 married Jane Knight - I am tryng to find out who he belonged to. Can't find any other details.

I am a descendent of William Fountayne and Joane Cooke from Stoke Hammond. The research by Christine Andricksen on the family lines back into France is particularly interesting. I would very much appreciate a GEDCOM and/or other related background information if Mr. Gray would kindly forward my email onto Christine. Thank you.

Craig,
The family of George Duncombe and Eliza Ann Fountain included a daughter Sarah born 30 Oct 1857 and baptized in Eaton Bray 30 Nov 1860. She is in the birth registrations. Eliza Ann also had a child before marriage. Ruth Fountain born abt 1855. Eliza Ann Fountain's mother was Sarah Cook and she married William Fountain 9 Mar 1822 in Eaton Bray. George Duncombe is my connection. His mother was an Osbourne.
Have fun,
#2100 Craig Lucas, 14 July 2014, 14:11
Charlotte,
I am just revisiting this site after a long break and saw your post. George Duncombe and Eliza Ann Fountain are my Great, Great, Great Grandparents on my maternal side. With Thomas Duncombe & Mary Osbourne being George's parents I believe. I have no further information at all on the Osbourne side.
