#764 Tom n Harry, 19 January 2011, 08:47

Hi Roger...
Possible birth for John reg Leighton Buzzard March 1865 3b 426.Can't find a baptism...Living with his uncle and aunt John and Eliza Cobb nee Hawkins in 1871 and 1881 census in Eaton Bray....Have searched in parish records 1559-1812 but can find no Drapers and also none on 1861 census for Eaton Bray...According to Eaton Bray Community Tree on John's marriage to Lizzie there was no fathers name given...Think maybe we are looking for him on his Mothers side born out of wedlock...Will carry on searching.

#765 Tom n Harry, 19 January 2011, 09:05

Where did you find his date of birth?

#766 Tom n Harry, 19 January 2011, 12:25

I see from your tree on GR that William was married in Houghton Regis.I have found an entry in The National Roll Of The Great War a W Draper of Bedford Road Houghton Regis in the Machine Gun Corps. Will post entry if you think it's him.

#767 Tom n Harry, 19 January 2011, 12:48

Looking for marriages for George Arthur Elsie and Rose but there are a few in the Luton District.Do you have any first names for any old uncles or aunts?

#774 Roger, 19 January 2011, 19:09

You say John Draper was living in Eaton Bray with his uncle and aunt John and Eliza Cobb nee Hawkins in the 1871, 1881 Census. Can you tell me how they are related? Would I be right in thinking Eliza was the daughter of John Hawkins and Mary Simmons. John Hawkins sister was Maria who was married to George Draper?

#775 Roger Weedon, 19 January 2011, 21:10

John Drapers wife Lizzie Fountain had siblings Catherine 1849, Sarah 1855 and William 1859. All born at Eaton Bray. These were the only aunts and uncle I can find of George Arthur Elsie and Rose.

Thanks for your help

#776 Tom n Harry, 20 January 2011, 07:31

Sorry Roger...I meant Gt Aunts or Gt Uncles for you...Am looking for marriages for George Arthur Elsie and Rose.

#779 Roger, 21 January 2011, 08:06

Elizabeth married Henry Rollings in Bedfordshire in 1909.
Rose May didn;t marry and lived at Hyde, Cheshire, England
16, Thornley Street - living with Aunt Sarah Ann Millen in 1911 Census.
Arthur married Winifred Barret in 1917 at Luton.
George married Annie Scrotchings in 1919 at Leighton Buzzard.

#973 Valerie Humphreys, 14 September 2011, 11:48

John's wife Lizzie had a sister called Catherine. She married David Faulkner and moved to Bredbury,Cheshire (straw hats to felt hats).Another Fountain sister (Sarah Ann) had moved in with them by 1881.In 1901 she is married and living in Liverpool and Rosa May is staying with them.If Rosa May stayed in Hyde she would have been with the Faulkner/Fountain relatives.I connect through Faulkner/Purton.

#974 Valerie Humphreys, 14 September 2011, 15:40

Sorry I should have also said that Lizzie was Lizzie Fountain before she married. Her parents were Jonas Fountain and Elizabeth Purton (born 1826 and died 1898). I don't have Jonas's parents but Elizabeth's were Thomas Purton born 1783 and Fanny Willis (1791 to 1847).If my hunch from  reading of the Familysearch IGI baptismal records is correct Elizabeth was sister to Thomas Purton who also moved up to the Hyde /Bredbury area to make felt hats.Thomas's daughter Annie married William Faulkner who was related to David thus further complicating the family links.Annie and William are my great, great grandparents.

#1010 Charlotte Easter, 2 October 2011, 10:11

Roger and Valerie,

Henry Rolling who married Elizabeth/Lizzie Draper was the great-nephew of my 2nd great-grandfather David Rollings.  William Faulkner who married Annie Purton was a brother of David Faulkner who married Catherine Fountain and both were great-nephews of my 3rd great-grandmother Fanny Tearle. Is there any question I can help you with about any of these relatives or their ancestors?

#1011 Charlotte Easter, 2 October 2011, 10:39

Valerie,

Jonas Fountain was the son of Richard Fountain and his 2nd wife Susannah Gadsden.  His first wife was Fanny Osborn who was a great-neice of my fourth great-grandfather Richard Tavener. Richard Fountain was a son of John Fountain and Ann Gayton who are the ancestors of most if not all of the Fountains in Eaton Bray.
Five of their children either married into parts of my family or their children did.

I am pretty sure that your Susannah is the daughter of Richard Gadsden and Ann Groom.  I know she is not the daughter of William Gadsden and Susannah Tearle as I have proven with info from those born in England that she married Thomas Twidell. It looks like the Susannah of about that age of James Gadsden and Susannah Burgess died young as another Susannah was born about 1810.

#1096 TJ, 15 November 2011, 10:14

I'm looking for the birth of Edward DRAPER whose parents may have been George and Marion. Edward was in Australia before 1867 as he married in Forbes, NSW, Australia in 1867. Died in 1907.

Would he be the son of George and Marian DRAPER who in 1881 (census) were living in Buxton Road Luton, Bedfordshire with children George, Charles, Arthur, Maria and William. All in straw hat making, except William who was a scholar?

#1097 Tom n Harry, 15 November 2011, 10:30

Might be him on 1891 census, given location of death:

1891 New South Wales, Australia Census

Name: Edward Draper
Locality: Parkes
Sub-District: H
County: Ashburnham
District: Forbes

It doesn't give any info like our census regarding residents, ages or occupations. It just says there were 4 males and 5 females in the household.

Love the name of the street - "No Mistake" !!

#1103 Tom n Harry, 15 November 2011, 14:28

1901 New South Wales, Australia Census

Name: E Draper
Locality: Deep Lead, Lead's Gully
Sub-District: J
County: Ashburnham
District: Forbes

Now it's 5 males and 4 females

#1104 Tom n Harry, 16 November 2011, 07:41

Edward seems a bit of a mystery. Can't find him on any census with parents or any baptism record in Luton. The one thing we do need is his age at death. There are some baptisms near Luton in the sticks in the 1840s-50s where we may be able to place him but not with above parents. What makes you think he was from England?

#1105 Tom n Harry, 17 November 2011, 08:14

More info from Genes...

This article states he died aged 80 years - given George & Marion's age it seems unlikely (impossible) they were having children in the late 1820s!

Australian Town and Country Journal, Wednesday 28 August 1907
OBITUARY.
Mr, Edward Draper, an old resident of the Parkes district, died last week, aged 80 years.

From NLA Trove newspaper site.

#1106 Tom n Harry, 17 November 2011, 08:15

This arrival fits:
DRAPER Edward 22 Elizabeth 1850 Sydney and/or Newcastle and brother (George, aged 20)

From www.records.nsw.gov.au

#1107 Tom n Harry, 17 November 2011, 09:26

TJ..

How are you related to Edward?
Do you know of any brothers or sisters or children of his?

#1108 Tom n Harry, 17 November 2011, 10:47

And yet more from Genes..

Found them in 1841:

Edward 14 at Clay Hall farm Walkern, Hertfordshire as S (servant); and

George 12 at Yardley - Hertfordshire as labourer both not listed with parents.

Departure Portsea, Southampton, per Elizabeth arriving N.S.W. via Assisted Immigration Scheme, 18/4/1850.

Edward Draper, labourer living Yardley Hertfordshire, parents George and Jane, mother living at Walkern, C of E, read and write.

George Draper, House Servant living Walkern Hert., parents listed as above, C of E, read and write.

So here are your two brothers, but not matching with your other information as far as parents and area of birth.

#1109 Tom n Harry, 17 November 2011, 20:11

I read the the entries on eatonbray.com regarding Edward Draper in the Forum titled Draper Family.

I think the query you are talking about is entry #1096 by TJ dated 15th Nov, 2011

I am the great grandson of Edward Draper who married in Forbes in 1857.

He is not the son of George and Marian Draper of Bedfordshire, as queried in #1096.

The death index shown in #1099 is for the same Edward and was advised by my paternal grandfather. He got the name of his grandmother incorrect ( I don't know how, but I do know he had a bad memory). Her name was Jane Bonfield. She married twice again after the death of first husband George Draper.

Entry #1100 refers to the same Edward but the name of his Spouse was, more correctly, Eughena Graham, she is buried at Parkes, NSW, cemetery as Hughena. She could not read or write and she had at least 5 "phonetic" names.  Angelia was one.

The Edward Draper in #1101 is one of the sons of Edward.snr and Eughena, my grandfather, George Robert Draper, is another of the sons, there were other brothers and sisters.(see #1102, #1103 et al)

The death notice for Edward.snr  (#1105) is correct, he was born in 1827 and died in 1907. The birth dates of the children  of George and Jane ( not Marion) are....Maria (1825), Edward (1827), George (1830), and Robert (1833).

The arrival of Edward.snr into Australia in 1850 on the "Elizabeth" with his brother George is correct ( #1106). George married early and started to produce children, Edward married Eughena much later.

Entry #1108 is correct for the two brothers before they left for Australia. They left a younger brother, Robert, in England ( I am still searching for him...he appears as Robert Aburn in the 1851 census)), and an older sister, Maria,  who had married in Lambeth.

I have a brief history of Edward and George in Australia. and can trace their ancestry back in England to the mid 1600's.

I hope this is of some help?   I have tried to be as concise as possible , so I hope it is clear?

I would like to know the link between "TJ" and the Draper family? "TJ" should feel free to email me at any time.

Graham Draper
